Where's Your Focus?
Written by Jared Capello
I’ve been hearing an unusual amount lately about focus. Things like, “Where focus goes, energy flows” and, “What you focus on you create more of”. If these statements are true (and they are), I want to ask you a simple question, “What do you typically focus on?”
When faced with a challenge, most people spend about 95% of their time focusing on the problem and only about 5% of their time on a solution. How does this translate into other daily details I wonder?
Our minds are like velcro when it comes to negativity and for this reason, we have a tendency to allow the negative opinions and views of others to take precedence in our minds over the more positive and empowering ones. Our own thoughts can easily become more negative as well when facing any sort of challenge from divorce to choosing what kind of coffee we want from The Laughing Goat (shout out to Boulder!).
So where’s the good news in all of this? -Why it’s right inside of your mind! You get to choose what you’re going to focus on and determine to not let your perspective be clouded by negativity and judgment. You get to choose to focus on the solutions more than the problems. You get to restructure your mind to become velcro for positivity rather than negativity.
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”- Wayne Dyer
Learning how to focus on the positive and keep your mentality and outlook on creativity, solutions and remaining inspired is not an escape from your emotions nor is it some idealistic, “just think positive” fad. It is being with what is and knowing that you have the solution. It’s choosing to see or find the good when everyone else simply and quite easily points out the bad. It’s remaining committed to living empowered rather than blaming circumstances, others, God or even yourself for what’s in front of you. It's choosing to live in the greater reality that you are the powerful creator of your life and your powerful thoughts create it.
Know that you have everything that it takes to face any challenge before you when you focus on solutions, your creativity, and the good. Hone your skills on mastering your focus and your life will change.
You can change your focus by adjusting your thoughts any time you notice them going in a downward spiral. At first, it may take you a while (3 hours, a day, a week) to catch the thought before it spirals but the more you do it, the quicker you'll get (an hour, 15 minutes, 15 seconds!) at recognizing and shifting your focus. Give yourself grace when doing this and celebrate when you catch it and shift. As another pointer, try noticing your body language as a key indicator of your thoughts. If your shoulders are shrugged, hanging low or there's a frown on your face, these are easy indicators that your thoughts may not be very vibrationally high. You can even adjust your body language first and often your thoughts will follow.
Lastly, I want to share this verse with you from Philippians 4:8, “...whatever things are lovely, noble, true, pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”
It is good for your mind, good for your physical health and incredibly beneficial for your overall quality of life to focus on things that will encourage you.
Change your focus, and your life will start to change.
Until next time…
Live the Love you were created from!
Forever Loving,
Jared
