Living from Heart or Mind?

Written by Jared Capello

This question can be daunting for many and the first option seems “unrealistic” to too many. The first causes many to scoff and reject it because they’ve been so calloused by life that they take no thought of their heart or basing their decisions from it. Most decisions made by responsible, western adults are based solely upon what is responsible to do or the most logical. This is not an either/or scenario here. I simply believe that if we would live from our hearts as we were intended to and let our minds help make judgment calls while listening to our hearts, we would be living the most responsible lives that we could be.

Our minds are phenomenal at pointing out the safest, most logical options but they were never intended to be our compass. Your heart was always intended to be your compass. Your heart knows what it wants and it cannot be lied to. Please believe me when I say it again, “Your heart, cannot be lied to.” Often times, this is what settling feels like because it’s what settling often is....lying to ourselves. Many of us have run into a problem where we made the decision to live from our hearts, wild, free and alive and then got hurt. Perhaps you then decided not to follow your heart in a certain area of your life because it caused too much pain the last time you did. Your mind took the wheel for this particular area of your life and made sure you avoided pain at all costs. Now what has that decision cost you? Are you feeling desensitized or dead in some area of your life?

If you are, know there’s hope and life and feeling that can be brought back to this area of your life. There’s time and plenty of resources to make the turn back to your heart with care and wisdom. The mistake was never in living from your heart and what brings you joy but in letting go of the partnership with your mind to help navigate you through some of the trickier terrain. It’s about not getting bent out of shape over some of the outcomes that caused you pain. It’s about not then complaining about these outcomes and feeling justified (and too often validated!) in doing so.

Turn back to your heart and live from there but don’t make decisions blindly without the discretion of your mind. You simply need both. Most you come in contact with live the majority of their lives from their minds and therefore judge you from there. If you value their opinions more than your joy, freedom and passion, you will allow their judgments to dictate your decisions.
