Quick Thought on God

"You must forget everything traditional that you have learned about God, perhaps even the word itself."  -Paul Tillich, German Philosopher & Lutheran Theologian

Everyone has a God-concept. None of these concepts are 100% accurate depictions of who God is. In fact, most of our God-concepts are likely to be extremely inaccurate. I am reading Honest to God by John Robinson and in the book, he deconstructs the God 'out there' and 'up there' construct (John A.T. Robinson, Honest to God (The Westminster Press, Philadelphia, 1963). He explains how most of us maintain an archaic worldview of a triple-decker cosmos: heavens, earth, and underground. This worldview is proven wrong by science, but most of us still view God as being 'up there' in the heavens. Such a worldview makes God feel distant and transcendent. Robinson proposes God to be One of immanency, not transcendence. God is not up to business somewhere 'up' or 'out there' because He is all in all, in everything and through everything. A view of God as the 'bearded man up in the sky' is merely a metaphor for a theological concept to which words can never perfectly articulate. Christianity has dumbed Him down to being a super-person, having human-like qualities, but supra. He can be confined to no such notion. He is way more than Person and way bigger than Being. He is All in All.
